THE Football Association of Ireland has appointed an executive with Independent News & Media (INM) as its new Director of Communications.

Ian Mallon, who has held a number of editorial roles within INM during a 17-year association with the group - including group head of news - will take up his new position on 28 September.

In a statement issued tonight, the FAI said that his new role will see Mr Mallon "lead the communications strategy and implement a roadmap for the association’s vision, from grassroots football up to the international teams".

INM Editor-in-Chief Stephen Rae said: "We wish Ian success in his new role in the FAI, and thank him for his many years of loyal service at INM".

FAI CEO John Delaney described Mr Mallon's role as a key position within the FAI.

"I’m delighted to welcome Ian on board and he will immediately become an important member of the executive team," said Mr Delaney.

"The FAI is excited by this key appointment, and we look forward to working with him."
