The FAI today confirmed that it has agreed an international friendly match with Turkey at Aviva Stadium on May 25.

The match will be preceded by the FAI Umbro Junior Cup final, repeating last year’s very successful format.

The Republic of Ireland has faced Turkey 12 times in its history, recording five wins, six draws and one defeat. Irish fans will recall the 1999 heartache of playing Turkey in the play offs for EURO 2000, starting with a 1-1 draw in Lansdowne Road and ending in a 0-0 draw in Bursa, allowing Turkey to go through on the away goals rule at the expense of Mick McCarthy’s men.

The match will form part of Martin O’Neill’s preparations for the Euro 2016 campaign starting with the upcoming friendly on March 5 in against Serbia and followed by Turkey on May 25.

The Association has also said that a number of other end of season friendly options are currently being explored and details will be confirmed as soon as they are finalised.
