Martin O'Neill has tasted defeat for the first time as Ireland manager in a competitive fixture. Shaun Maloney produced a moment of magic to separate the teams. Here are the other key moments.

1. Grant Hanley avoids red card (9 minutes)

Shane Long did what he dies best by taking the ball of the foot of Grant Hanley who promptly took him down when he was clean through. Long's touch was heavy and the ref opted for yellow. Hanley later put his forearm into the face of David Forde and was lucky not to get his marching orders.

2. Seamus Coleman denies Mulgrew (33 minutes)

Charlie Mulgrew would have had an easy header but for the pressure applied by Seamus Coleman after Maloney had swung in a dangerous cross. It came minutes after he took a ball off the head of Naismith from another cross.

3. Missed Flick from Steven Fletcher (41 minutes)

Russell Martin found Shaun Maloney with a tremendous ball but when he crossed for Steven Fletcher, who had blindsided Richard Keogh, the Sunderland man tried to flick with his left instead of hit with his right and botched the chance.

4. Shane Long header saved by Marshall (52 minutes)

The ball was pinging around the Scottish box following an Irish corner when Walters thumped a header towards goal which Long instinctively headed but Marshall managed to gather. Aiden mcGeady's well struck volley was denied by Marshall minutes later.

5. Chris Martin misses a sitter (65 minutes)

Steven Naismith was at the centre of everything that was good for Scotland and squared for substitute Chris Martin who missed the target from seven yards.

6. Shaun Maloney put Scotland in front (74 minutes)

Shaun Maloney plays a one-two with Scott Brown, who was in an ocean of space in the area , before he curled it around David Forde beautifully.

7. Ireland hit the crossbar in added time (93 minutes)

Ireland piled on some pressure as the clock ticked away. A superb free kick from Robbie Brady was headed onto his own bar by Grant Hanley.
