Torres back in spain fold
Champions League winners Fernando Torres and Juan Mata have been added to the Spain squad ahead of the upcoming friendlies against Serbia and South Korea, the Spanish football federation have announced.
The duo, who on Saturday helped Chelsea win the European Cup for the first time in their history, were initially absent from Vicente del Bosque's 21-man squad along with players from Copa del Rey finalists Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao due to their club commitments.
But the two forwards were yesterday called up by Del Bosque. Spain's coach will name his final list to defend the European title on May 27, when Torres will find out whether he has made the cut after an inconsistent season at Chelsea.
Torres said on Sunday that he had had the worst moments of his career with Chelsea this season and needed clarity about his future role with the London club.
The former Liverpool star said that he was bitterly disappointed at being left out of the starting line-up for the Champions League final and said if it had not been for the support of the fans during a difficult campaign he would have "thrown in the towel".
Giovanni Trapattoni's team take on holders Spain in Gdansk on June 14 and Ireland's assistant manager Marco Tardelli believes Torres will make the final cut.
"I think he will be in the squad. He has had some problems, but that doesn't change my opinion of him being a very good player," he said.
