BOOKMAKER Paddy Power is to pay up the €100,000 fine imposed on Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner by UEFA for revealing the company’s logo on his underpants while celebrating a goal in Ukraine on June 13.
Bendtner lifted his jersey to show the Paddy Power logo on the waistband of his underpants after scoring his second goal in the Euro 2012 3-3 Group B loss to Portugal.
The striker later said they were his lucky underpants and Paddy Power has already ruled out any underhand marketing ploy.
Bendtner has also been banned from one match by UEFA following the move.
Company spokesman Paddy Power said today it was only a bit of fun and it would be paying the fine.
“They were only his lucky underpants,” he said.
“It’s not fair that he would be caught up in this and we’re paying the fine.”
He added that much lower fines had been imposed for racial abuse, by comparison.
The 24-year-old Arsenal forward can lodge an appeal within three days.
