Devastated Kevin Foley's uncle hits out at Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni
AN uncle of heartbroken Ireland defender Kevin Foley yesterday hit out at manager Giovanni Trapattoni after the player's shock removal from the Euro 2012 squad.
The 27 year old's parents, together with dozens of south Kerry fans, were set to travel to Poland to see him, but trips are now being cancelled.
"Trapattoni wouldn't get much of a welcome if he came here I can tell you that," said John Foley, who lives in Waterville.
Mr Foley only heard he was being axed half an hour before a final list of 23 squad names had to be submitted to Uefa.
Although he was in the initial squad named on May 7 last, Mr Trapattoni decided the more versatile defender Paul McShane was a better option because of injury concerns with other players.
Speaking on Tuesday night, the Wolverhampton Wanderers player said he felt betrayed by the Ireland manager.
"He was saying it was devastating when (Trapattoni) called and told him that he wouldn't be travelling," added his uncle.
