The tournament is just a few hours old but the Irish and Northern Irish are already competing for the title of best fans at Euro 2016.

The massive Fanzone, at the base of the Eiffel Tower, was the setting for a huge party last night and the Boys in Green from both sides of border were at the centre of it.

There were 40,000 people in the Fanzone and police recorded no incidents of misbehaviour.

Brian O'Donnell (28) and Jason Small (29) from Co Tyrone were arm in arm with Englishman Tom Baxter (37) from Essex.

Tom said: "We are just out to enjoy it, meet other people."

Jason added: "So far it's been fine. I've only been in here ten minutes and already I've had photos taken with fans from all around Europe. It's been really good and interactive.

"We came here to meet people from all over Europe and it's been really great so far."

Earlier Dubliners Colm Carroll, Donal O'Doherty, Christopher Hopkins, Ciaran O'Brien, Alan O'Riordan, Karl Butler, Sean Finlay, Helena Maginn and Ciara Farrell serenaded the Paris metro with a rousing rendition of 'Stand up for the Boys in Green' - much to the amusement of commuters.
