President Michael D Higgins led the celebrations at the Stade Pierre Mauroy as Robbie Brady headed home Ireland’s winning goal against Italy to ensure their place the knockout stages of Euro 2016.

President Higgins today congratulated the Irish soccer teams competing in the Euros for their “deserved success”.

“Tonight’s game was a wonderful achievement and I want to extend my warmest congratulations to the Republic of Ireland team, the coaches and all those who made this well deserved success possible.

“All of those interested in soccer will welcome the fact that now both Irish teams have made it through to the knock out stages of the tournament, and remain in contention for the Henri Delaunay cup.

“May I pay tribute to the Irish fans who have earned widespread acclaim for their behaviour in France. Ireland could not wish for better ambassadors abroad.”

Despite dominating the game, it was the 84th minute before Robbie Brady notched the decisive strike, and the president could barely contain himself.

What a leap!
