Watch: Open-top bus ordered by France to celebrate Euros triumph chugs along all sad and lonely

Tom Rooney

It looks like the French FA were so sure that Les Bleus would triumph against Portugal in the final of the European Championships, that they went ahead and ordered an open-top bus for a victory parade through the streets of Paris.

Is there a more venial sporting sin than hubris? Possibly not. Unquestionably, France were the consensus favourites going into Sunday’s finale at the Stade de France, but not so much as to presume that an open top bus needed sourcing.

Éder’s extra time strike ensured that Portugal were crowned kings of Europe for 2016, while France were forced to contemplate what might have been.

Given the custom paint job - which must have been commissioned in advance - on the two-story vehicle, perhaps the host nation presumed that victory was guaranteed even prior to securing their place at the business end of the tournament.

Well, as can be seen below, the notion was premature. If you want to make the football gods laugh, tell them your plans.
