Emma tops poll

STAND up Emma Byrne and take a well deserved bow.

The Arsenal and Ireland goalkeeper is the only Irish player who received a vote in the recent FIFA World Player of the Year polls.

While no Irish player received a scratch in the male vote, Pedro Mabale Fuga, the coach to Equatorial Guinea's women's national team, gave Byrne his No 2 vote in the women's poll.

Ireland's team manager Noel King didn't exercise his option to give No 2 or No 3 votes. He just plumped for Germany's Birgit Prinz.

In the men's vote, Brian Kerr went for Thierry Henry as his World Player of the Year with the eventual winner Zinedine Zidane his second choice, followed by Manchester United and Holland striker Ruud van Nistlerooy.
