Stephen Kenny's Dundalk face some very daunting away trips after being drawn in Group D of the Europa League group stages this afternoon in Monaco.

The Irish champions will take on Zenit St Petersburg, Dutch side AZ Alkmaar and Maccabi Tel-Aviv of Israel.

The Lilywhites were on route to Ferrycarraig Park for their Airtricity League Premier Division meeting with Wexford Youths when the draw took place.

Zenit boast the likes of Aleksandr Kerzhakov, Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel and former Man City midfielder Javi Garcia among their ranks.

AZ Alkmaar were fourth in the Eredivisie last season and will provide stiff opposition, while Maccabi Tel-Aviv have plenty of experience in European football.

Jose Mourinho's Manchester United has been handed a difficult assignment in Group A against Fenerbahce of Turkey, Feyenoord of Holland and Ukrainian side Zorya Luhansk.

Robin van Persie will make a first return to Old Trafford since leaving in 2015 when travel to England for the headline clash in Group A

Southampton have a glamour tie against Inter Milan and have also been drawn against Sparta Prague and Israel's Hapoel Be'er Sheva, who gave Celtic a scare in their Champions League qualifier.

Games will be played from September 15 to December 8. The top two teams from each group are joined in the round-of-32 by the eight third-place teams from the Champions League groups.
