Cardiff's chances of putting one foot into the Premier League were dented by a 3-1 defeat in last night's Championship clash at Derby County.

Victory for Neil Warnock's men would have given them a four point cushion over third-placed Fulham, however, despite taking an early lead and holding on until 21 minutes remaining, they were undone through late goals from Matej Vydra and two from Cameron Jerome which lifted the home side back into the play-off places.

Elsewhere, Barnsley's hopes of avoiding the drop were hit by a 3-0 defeat to Nottinham Forest which leaves them two points off Bolton Wanderers.

One team definitely playing in the Championship next season are Blackburn Rovers who sealed promotion out of League One thanks to Charles Mulgrew's goal and a 1-0 win over Doncaster.

With Shrewsbury coming from behind to beat Peterborough, Rovers had looked like they would have to wait to secure a top-two spot in the League One.

But Mulgrew finally rewarded the Lancashire side for all their second-half pressure when he headed home with 10 minutes remaining at the Keepmoat Stadium.

In League Two, Chesterfield's stint as a Football League club which dates back to 1921 was ended when they were relegated once Morecambe picked up a point against Cambridge.
