Roberto Martinez has ruled Seamus Coleman out of tonight's trip to Anfield – but Aiden McGeady is hopeful of getting his first taste of derby action.

After missing Saturday's FA Cup fourth round victory over Stevenage with a hamstring injury, Coleman will not be ready in time for this evening's crucial league game against their neighbours and rivals for a Champions League spot.

"Seamus is out," said Martinez yesterday. "While he is not far away, the derby game has come too soon."

It has probably come too soon for McGeady as well. Yet after featuring against Stevenage, McGeady is confident of making an impact this evening.

"I don't expect to be starting straight in there for a game of this importance," said McGeady, "but Saturday's experience will help me perform whenever I come on. I felt sharp in the first half of Saturday's game but became a bit sloppy as the match wore on. As a result, I got a bit frustrated with myself, but I can't be too self-critical, given how I haven't started a match for a long time."
