Cisse steals it at death for Magpies
Newcastle United 1
Anzhi Makhachkala 0
(Newcastle win 1-0 on agg)
PAPISS CISSE scored in the last act of the game to send Newcastle United into the quarter-finals of the Europa League at the end of a fascinating tussle.
The striker pounced deep into stoppage-time with a clinical header from Sylvain Marveaux's cross after Newcastle had ridden their luck in the first half before taking control of the second.
A goalless draw away in the first leg of European competition is never as good as it seems on the flight back home. Although Newcastle needed to win on their own turf to progress, Anzhi only needed a score draw to do the same.
The Russians had enough firepower to worry their hosts and Samuel Eto'o dragged an early shot wide after running in behind the defence.
Newcastle were being stretched and they needed Steven Taylor to make three crucial blocks, two with his feet and one with his chest, to thwart Lassana Diarra.
It became even harder when they lost their playmaker, Yohan Cabaye, to a groin strain and as he limped down the tunnel. Newcastle had another let-off when Odil Ahmedov fired wide.
Taylor came close with a glancing header after the break, but with two minutes remaining Mbark Boussoufa almost won it for Anzhi when he curled a free-kick against the bar from six yards.
To compound the miss, Cisse gleefully headed home at the death to send the home fans wild.
