CHELSEA have tonight confirmed the appointment of Rafael Benitez as the club’s new interim manager.

The club announced the news in an official statement on their website tonight.

He will fill the role of interim manager until the end of the season.

The 52-year-old Spaniard and former Liverpool manager is due to meet the players at the training ground in Cobham tomorrow.

Benitez formerly manager Valencia where he built a reputation as one of Europe's top coaches by winning the Spanish League twice and the UEFA Cup.

He then spent six years at Liverpool and led them to their fifth European Cup and an FA Cup.

The club dramatically sacked Roberto Di Matteo just hours after their Champions League defeat to Juventus last night.
