Liverpool nearly got to the half hour mark without conceding, but striker Karim Benzema again struck against the Reds to open the scoring at the Bernabeu.

There were fears beforehand that the match could turn into a rout after Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers decided to rest captain Steven Gerrard, Raheem Sterling, Philippe Coutinho and Mario Balotelli for the daunting fixture.

Despite dominating possession, it took 28 minutes for the home side to take the lead, with the French striker sliding home a pinpoint Marcelo cross.
