Manuel Neuer in social media 'holiday' taunt to Arsenal

Manuel Neuer has already given Arsene Wenger his team talk for Arsenal’s Champions League last-16 second leg after the Bayern Munich goalkeeper claimed last week’s 5-1 victory felt like “a holiday”.

Bayern thrashed Arsenal 5-1 for the second time in the space of 15 months last week in a result that leaves the Gunners clinging on to their European campaign by the smallest of threads. Needing a 4-0 victory or better to knock Bayern out of the Champions League when they meet in the second leg at the Emirates Stadium on 7 March, it’s highly unlikely that Arsenal will end their run of six straight last-16 eliminations.

The departure of Laurent Koscielny with a hamstring injury shortly after half-time appeared to change the game at the Allianz Arena, with Arsenal seeing a hard-fought 1-1 scoreline quickly deteriorate into a 5-1 drubbing.

The Premier League side visibly dropped off after the break as their effort levels reduced, and the result has been made all the worse for the Gunners given that Bayern needed a late Robert Lewandowski goal with the last kick of the game to salvage a 1-1 draw with Hertha Berlin at the weekend in the Bundesliga.

The draw led Germany international goalkeeper Neuer to take to Facebook and post a tongue-in-cheek message taunting Arsenal for how easy Bayern found their first leg the week before.

Writing in German, Neuer said: “After the holiday last Wednesday, yesterday was a hard day at work again.”

The comical jibe comes after the official Bayern Twitter account taunted Arsenal immediately after the crushing victory, posting a message to say “Same again next year? #UCL #FCBARS 5-1” before deleting the tweet.
