Man City advance to Champions League last eight despite home defeat to Basel
Man City 1 Basel 2 (Man City 5 Basel 2 on aggregate)
Manchester City slipped to their first home defeat since December 2016 as Basel won the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie 2-1.
It was not enough to prevent Pep Guardiola's side progressing to the quarter-finals, with Gabriel Jesus' early goal helping them to an overall 5-2 aggregate success, but it was still an unexpected slip.
Jesus put the Premier League leaders ahead inside eight minutes but the Swiss champions responded to take victory on the night with goals from the impressive Mohamed Elyounoussi and Michael Lang.
City defender John Stones told BT Sport 3: "We're through to the next round and that's what matters.
"We wanted to make sure we got through to the next round and bettered last season, when we got knocked out at Monaco.
"It hurt, we wanted to put it right and we've done that - but we're not happy with how we played tonight.
"There are a lot of things we need to look at, individually and as a team. We weren't at our best. We set ourselves high standards and we did not hit that standard but I think we've got a good mentality about us."
