The surprise packet of this year's Champions League Atalanta look to have one foot in the quarter-finals after last night's 4-1 victory at home to Valencia.

The Serie A side are enjoying their first season in Europe's elite competition and hit the ground running with Dutch defender Hans Hateboer opening the scoring after 16 minutes. Josip Ilicic had Atalanta 2-0 up by half-time in the first leg of their round of 16 clash at the San Siro.

Remo Freuler and a second from Hateboer stretched Atalanta's lead to 4-0, before Russian striker Denis Cheryshev reduced the deficit ahead of the return fixture at the Mestalla in three weeks' time.
