Former AC Milan midfielder Stefano Salvatori has passed away aged 49.

The Italian was part of the Milan squad that won the European Cup in 1990, and played against Barcelona in the UEFA Super Cup win over Barcelona the previous winter in 1989.

He went on to play for Hearts in the SPL for three seasons between 1996 and 1999, winning the Scottish Cup in 1998.

Salvatori retired from football in 2002.

"He wrote his name into Hearts folklore by helping the Jambos to lift the 1998 Scottish Cup with a 2-1 win over Rangers, and in the process earning himself legendary status in Gorgie," Hearts said in a statement.

"The club would like to pass on its condolences to the family and friends of Stefano."
