One of the more bizarre hashtags took over Twitter yesterday when #FindSteveFinnan started to trend after the Liverpool Echo reported that former Ireland international Finnan could not be contacted to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Liverpool's Champions league win in Istanbul.

But the Irish Independent's Daniel McDonnell last night confirmed on Newstalk's Off The ball that he "made some enquiries" and Finnan is safe and well "enjoying life out of the limelight and not seeking any form of post-football fame or media work".

Liverpool are set hail their 2005 Champions League winning heroes next week. On Monday night, the ECHO Arena in Liverpool will allow itself to wallow in nostalgia as it hosts the Istanbul Reunion night to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the club’s most famous night.

Finnan played only the first half at Istanbul before succumbing to injury, but he featured in all bar one Champions League match en route to the final.

It was the introduction of Dietmar Hamann at the interval, in place of the injured Finnan,  which shored up the Reds defensively and allowed the Merseysiders claw back the 3-0 deficit and claim the trophy during a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

Finnan played 217 games for Liverpool, but his whereabouts are currently unknown, with a building company previously linked with Finnan unable to help the event organisers in finding the former Red.

#FindSteveFinnan was being used on Twitter in an effort to make contact with Finnan.
