Burke's late penalty save gives Ireland hope

REECE Grego-Cox put the Irish U-17s firmly in contention to reach May's European Championships by scoring the only goal of their UEFA elite stage qualifier against mini-group hosts Austria.

The QPR attacker followed up his recent goal against Croatia with a 22nd-minute strike.

Tom Mohan's Irish side came under sustained late pressure as the snow teemed down in Schwechat-Rannersdorf and conceded a penalty in stoppage-time when Dan Cleary handled in the box.

However, the spot-kick from Adrian Grbic was brilliantly stopped by goalkeeper Peter Burke of Sunderland.

This victory means another three points in tomorrow morning's game against Georgia will set Ireland up for a decisive tie against Serbia in Saturday's final match.

Only the top team from the four-nation group progresses to the finals.

IRELAND – Burke (Sunderland); Mitchell (Bristol City), Cleary (Liverpool), Dempsey (Aston Villa), Mosely (Birmingham City); Mulhall (Stella Maris), Byrne (Manchester City), Donnellan (College Corinthians); Charsley (Everton), Stokes (Leeds United), R Grego-Cox (QPR). Sub: J Mulraney (Notts Forest) for Charsley (80 ).
