Bug takes its toll as Republic make exit in Malaysia

DON GIVENS' Republic of Ireland side were knocked out of the Inter-Continental Cup in Malaysia yesterday, with Australia benefiting from the viral enteritis which spread through the Irish camp the day before the game.

Defenders Eddie Nolan and Darren Dennehy were both ruled out of the semi-final fixture, while captain Stephen Ward and Michael Collins could not even make half time in the clash which ended in a 3-1 win for the Aussies.

Opposition striker Matthew Simon headed home twice to give Australia a clear advantage before the interval, and completed his hat-trick with 15 minutes remaining.

Ireland -- down to the bare bones -- did pull one back with six minutes left courtesy of Alan Judge.
