Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has warned Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal that he will never win over his critics unless his team win with style.

Van Gaal has come under fire from United supporters for the dour brand of football he is promoting, yet Rodgers suggestion the veteran Dutchman deserves to be respected as he made an appearance as a studio analyst on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

Sky threw up some stats that confirmed Van Gaal has a stunning record of picking up big results against his top six rivals in the Premier League, but that has not stopped the criticism flowing in his direction.

“He is a top class manager,” declared Rodgers. “He is hugely experienced and has worked at some of the biggest clubs in the world.

“But when you are at a big club, it’s not just about winning, it’s about the style as well.”

Rodgers offered his views on a wide range of topics as he saw his former side Swansea defeat another of his ex-employers Watford 1-0, with his opinions on Luis Suarez confirming he still has huge admiration for his former striker.

Suarez missed out on a place in the top three of last week's Ballon d'Or ceremony to crown the best player in the world, with Rodgers suggesting the Uruguayan was left out of the the running for the top prize for non-sporting reasons.
