Bournemouth raise £3000 for Burton supporters after cancellation of FA Cup fixture
The romance of the FA Cup is still alive, as illustrated by generous Bournemouth supporters.
The third round FA Cup fixture between Bournemouth and Burton at the Goldsands Stadium fell foul of the weather on Saturday, though officials waited until an hour before kick-off before calling the game off.
For the 200 travelling Burton fans it meant their 300-mile round journey was in vain, but the home fans decided to fundraise for their Burton counterparts in light of the wasted journey. Initially they had hoped to raise £800, but they have already reached a figure of £3000 ahead of the re-arranged fixture.
The Cherries fans were happy to assist Burton supporters as the Brewers were incredibly gracious in letting their opponents celebrate their promotion from League Two at Pirelli Stadium back in 2010, with the Cherries allowed to rejoice on the Burton pitch en masse after the game.
“It shows there is another side to football. They were so hospitable that day that there’s been a special feeling between the clubs ever since,” fundraising organiser and Bournemouth fan David Whitehead told BBC Radio Solent.
