Best hoping for good news
LEON BEST will find out today if the knee injury he sustained against Aston Villa last Sunday will rule him out of Ireland’s friendly with the Czech Republic later this month.
The striker damaged his medial ligament after a collision with Stephen Warnock during the first half of the 2-1 win and manager Alan Pardew initially feared the injury would keep the 25-year-old out for six weeks.
However, there are fresh hopes that the knock is not as bad as first feared. “I think he's okay,” Pardew said. “He's hurt his medial ligament but we're hoping he's going to be okay.”
Best, who turned down a deadline-day move to Celtic to fight for his place at St James’s Park, will find it difficult to get back into the team after debutant Papiss Cisse scored the winning goal against Villa.
And he faces an even bigger battle to force his way into Ireland’s Euro 2012 squad.
