Baker dumps Bohs out

Portadown 2
Bohemians 0
(Portadown win 4-1 on aggregate)

Holders Bohemians saw their grip on the Setanta Sports Cup ended at the first hurdle last night.

The Gypsies failed to get going at a bitterly cold Shamrock Park, exiting the competition at the first stage after a 4-1 aggregate defeat.

In truth, the tie was over before the hour mark.

Bohemians made the worst possible start when Jordan Baker fired Portadown ahead after 10 minutes, and rarely looked like turning around the tie.

When Tim Mouncey doubled the home side's lead three minutes into the second half, there was no way back.

The Ports now advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face Sligo Rovers.

Defeat in last week's first leg had left Bohemians with it all to do. But there were few signs of them turning things around in the first half, with Portadown deservedly holding a one-goal lead at the break.

The goal came after 10 minutes when Mouncey -- the main threat in the opening half -- crossed for Baker to fire home from close range.

Shane McCabe's shot was then deflected behind off Kevin Feely, before Baker missed a glorious chance to stretch the Ports' lead from the corner.

Mouncey sent a great ball across the box but the striker, a yard or two out, couldn't find the target.

However, Bohemians rarely looked like capitalising on that let-off. David Miskelly easily collected Christopher Forrester's angled strike, and then a dipping effort from midfielder Robert Bayly went narrowly over.

Between those two chances Portadown almost stretched their advantage, with Brian Gartland's strike cleared off the line.

It left Bohemians needing a big response -- and two goals -- in the second half.

But their hopes were all but ended when Portadown scored again in the 48th minute.

Ross Redman released Richard Lecky down the left flank and he pulled the ball back to the predatory Mouncey, whose 20-yard effort arrowed into the bottom corner.

PORTADOWN -- Miskelly, Redman, O'Hara, Breen (Ramsey, 73), Braniff (Haire, 69), Mouncey (Mackle 78), Baker, Cawley, McCabe, Lecky, Gartland.

BOHEMIANS -- Sexton, Price, Joyce, Rossitor (Heary, 73), Feely, Bayly, Burke, Buckley, Ladola (Flood, 46), Forrester (Fagan, 46), Lopez.
