Atletico take step closer to La Liga crown
Atletico Madrid continued their charge towards the Spanish title with a 2-0 victory over 10-man Getafe thanks to goals from Diego Godin and Diego Costa, which stretched their advantage at the top to three points.
Centre-back Godin nodded the ball into an empty net five minutes before half-time after a mistake by Getafe goalkeeper Jordi Codina.
Getafe's Angel Lafita was sent off for hauling Miranda down in the penalty area but Costa, back in the side after injury, had his 66th-minute spot-kick saved.
Costa made amends when he slid in to divert an Adriano cross into the net six minutes from time. The goal came at a cost, however, as Atletico's leading scorer had to be carried off after crashing into a post and opening what looked like a deep gash just below his left knee.
Real Madrid climbed above Barcelona into second with a 4-0 stroll at home to Almeria.
Meanwhile in Germany, Borussia Dortmund crushed champions Bayern Munich 3-0.
Just three days after they beat Real Madrid 2-0 but were eliminated in the Champions League last eight 3-2 on aggregate, Dortmund confirmed their battling spirit by inflicting the heaviest defeat in coach Pep Guardiola's career.
In Italy, goals from Rodrigo Taddei, Adem Ljajic and Gervinho helped Roma keep up the pressure on Serie A leaders Juventus, who visit Udinese tonight, with a comfortable 3-1 win against Atalanta.
