Two goals from Garbhan Coughlan and a Sam O'Connor strike enabled Athlone Town to see off Liffey Wanderers in the rain on Saturday evening.
On 18 minutes a slick move saw Alan Mathews' side take the lead when Marco Chindea's cross from the right flank fell to O'Connor and he made no mistake from close range at the back post.
Two minutes later Athlone doubled their lead when Coughlan spotted a gap in the Wanderers defence and with just Philip O'Connor to beat, he slotted neatly into the bottom corner.
John Young's charges kept battling, but Coughlan grabbed his second on the stroke of half-time. Another fine Athlone move saw Daniel Purdy provide a perfect crossfield ball to Chindea and his dinked effort at goal was missing the target until Coughlan arrived at the back post again to score.
Six minutes after the restart Liffey Wanderers grabbed a deserved consolation goal when Athlone fell asleep at the back and Jamie Roche produced a fine finish as the midlands rain showed no sign of letting up.
With 92 minutes on the clock Lee Roche scored the goal of the night for Wanderers but it was too little, too late.
