Ireland are struggling at half time at Twickenham as two well-worked tries have England 12-3 in front. Tommy Bowe came into the game needing a big performance to maintain his starting position but he was exploited defensively in the game's opening exchanges.

The Ulster wing was beaten by his counterpart Jonny May, not once, but twice in the build-up to the game's first try, with Bowe's poor attempt at tackling allowing the English number 11 to explode over the line.

Minutes later, Anthony Watson climbed over Simon Zebo to claim a cross-kick with authority before touching down.

Joe Schmidt will be worried about the frequency with which England are breaching the Irish defence and at the moment the men in green look a long way off their efficient best.

Former Ireland international Shane Horgan told Sky Sports that it was the 'worst 40 minutes of the Joe Schmidt era'.

"From an Ireland perspective, we're still in the game but we should be 25 points plus behind but we're not."

Ireland missed 11 tackles in the opening half.
