Tom Rooney

There were very few good displays for Ireland today in London.

Ireland

Simon Zebo: Worryingly unsure defensively. Rob Kearney has no reason to be looking over his shoulder ahead of World Cup. 5

Tommy Bowe: Skinned more than once by opposite number Johnny May in first quarter, and continued to miss a string of tackles. 5

Jared Payne: Made just 14 metres from six carries and continues to offer little creativity. Much more required. 6

Robbie Henshaw: Worked tirelessly with and without the ball but will rue his forward pass to Zebo when a game-changing breakaway try looked on. 6

Dave Kearney: One of the shinning lights in a largely dismal display. Always hungry for ball and consistently looked to test the hosts.  7

Johnny Sexton: Starved of ball for the majority of the game and rarely given a platform to dictate play. Hobbled off towards the end. 6

Conor Murray: Replaced after 16 minutes by Eoin Reddan, who wasn’t afforded an enough clean ball by his pack. 5

Jack McGrath: A strong showing in the scum, though his failure to generate serious momentum further highlights the importance of Cian Healy. 6

Rory Best: Will be pleased that Ireland secured all but one of their 12 lineouts and put in an immense clear-out for O’Connell’s try. 7

Mike Ross: Another good effort against his old foe Joe Marler in the scrum. Remains a lynchpin in the Irish set-up. 6

Devin Toner: Typically efficient at the lineout, though ineffectual in the loose. Iain Henderson the better option at this time. 5

Paul O’Connell: Dotted down for a vital try but his inability to assert himself in the trenches set the tone for a disappointing day.  6

Peter O’Mahony: Was virtually anonymous by his own high standards and, from start to finish, paled in comparison to counterpart Tom Wood. 5

Sean O’Brien: Not his most authoritative display at the breakdown and spilled ball at crucial times. No one will know this more than him. 6

Jamie Heaslip: Fell of some tackles early on, before improving in the second half. Part of a pack that was far too timid at times. 6

Replacements

Richardt Strauss: Scant opportunity to alter proceedings. 5

Tadhg Furlong: Joined the fray at a fraught finale. 6

Nathan White: Solid enough effort. 6

Donncha Ryan: Made one impressive track-back tackle. 7

Chris Henry: Impossible to judge the flanker once he was forced to fill in on the wing. 6

Eoin Reddan: Lacked the impetus that Murray normally offers. 5

Ian Madigan: Made several questionable decisions. 6

Darren Cave: Ran hard but struggled to shine. 6

England

MIKE BROWN: Solid and tidy, but had little to do. 6

ANTHONY WATSON: Finished brilliantly once again. Deadly. 7

JONATHAN JOSEPH: Started well but game moved away from him. 6

BRAD BARRITT: Took route one in attack and tackled well. 6

JONNY MAY: Finished an early try and threatened throughout. 8

GEORGE FORD: Up and down performance, but set up Watson's try. 6

BEN YOUNGS: Showed lovely hands for May's try. 7

JOE MARLER: Strong and abrasive in the loose. 7

TOM YOUNGS: Far more conspicuous than in Paris. Ran hard. 7

DAN COLE: England's scrum continues to be have its problems. 6

GEOFF PARLING: Helped the line-out with his return. 7

COURTNEY LAWES: Quiet once again, hopefully he burst into life soon. 6

TOM WOOD: Man of the match in an eye-catching display. 8

CHRIS ROBSHAW (CAPT): England chief marksman in strong defensive effort. 8

BEN MORGAN: Continued to regain fitness after long injury lay-off. 6

Replacements

JAMIE GEORGE: Did his job when he came on. 5

MAKO VUNIPOLA: Quiet appearance from the bench. 5

KIERAN BROOKES: Arrived late so little chance to shine. 5

JOE LAUNCHBURY: Threw himself into the breakdown. 5

BILLY VUNIPOLA: Dropped a visible pass. 4

RICHARD WIGGLESWORTH: Neat and tidy. 5

OWEN FARRELL: Kicked his goals, but handled poorly. 5

SAM BURGESS: Showed promise, could be exciting. 5
