Will Greenwood believes Ireland’s head coach employs a similar tactical approach to the late, great Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough.

Writing in the Telegraph, the three-time Lion claimed that Schmidt, like Clough, who won consecutive European Cups with Forest, moulds players to his system and not vice-versa.

“Joe Schmidt, Ireland’s New Zealand-born rugby coach, has the style of a football manager. Some coaches pick players and then decide the style they want the team to play. Schmidt knows what he wants and then goes about persuading his players that his way is the best way to win a game.

“He relies on his research and his ability to create a strategy that is efficient, exciting and full of surprises. He reminds me of Brian Clough and the way the legendary Nottingham Forrest manager described how he discussed tactics with his players: ‘“We talk about it for 20 minutes and then we decide I was right.”’

It’s a strange likening in one way, given how outspoken and scathing Clough could be, while our Joe is always so reserved and pleasant. Unless, of course, it’s Monday morning video analysis meeting.
