Walters clinches Bandon victory

A GOOD second-half performance from Bandon Grammar School saw them overcome Midleton College at Bandon RFC yesterday.

Having battled well to keep out their east Cork opponents during the first half, Bandon used the elements to their advantage in the second period.

Out-half Darren Sweetnam provided composure at the heart of Bandon's attacks, while No 8 Peter Deane and hooker Neil Willoughby carried the ball well for long periods.

While Midleton exerted most of the pressure in the first half, they could not make it count as the Bandon rearguard steadfastly refused to yield, and it was scoreless at the break.

After the turnaround, it was Bandon's turn to press and they eventually took the lead when Sweetnam scored a penalty.

Ten minutes from time they wrapped things up.

Sweetnam's kick from deep put Midleton full-back Ben Mitchell in trouble and though he gathered, his kick was blocked down by Mighty Okafor, allowing Ieuan Walters to cross the line for the crucial touch down.

The West Cork school now play Rockwell next week with a place in the first round proper at stake.
