Victory over Wallabies Ireland's greatest

THE merits of winning are, sometimes much like beauty, purely in the eye of the beholder.

And yet, in a recent poll to assess the three greatest wins in Irish rugby history, I was astonished to find that beating Wales to take the Grand Slam in 2009 ranked not so much ahead of beating England at Croke Park (and all that historic day entailed for so many reasons) in 2007, but more particularly ahead of beating Australia 15-6 at the 2011 World Cup in New Zealand, courtesy of nine points from Jonathan Sexton (pictured left) and six from Ronan O'Gara.

Call me dull, maybe un-informed, but that victory over the Wallabies in the premier tournament in world rugby, most particularly given the full-on competitive element on southern hemisphere soil, represented our greatest victory by far.
