Ulster are on high alert after their new coach Jono Gibbes was strongly linked with a position on Michael Cheika's Australia coaching staff last night.

The former All Black took over the reins from Les Kiss who left the province two weeks ago and was widely tipped as the man to lead the struggling northern province into next season and beyond.

However Gibbes, who took a trip to the southern hemisphere over the Christmas period, is in demand and could be tempted into linking up with his old Leinster boss, who handed him his start in coaching.

Cheika is on the lookout for a set-piece specialist to replace Mario Ledesma who has returned to Argentina after a stint with the Wallabies.

The potential loss of Gibbes would be a major blow to Ulster who have been inconsistent all season and missed out on the Champions Cup quarter-finals.
