UCC thrown out of Munster Cup after failing to fulfil fixture

Hugh Farrelly

UCC have been thrown out of the Munster Senior Cup for failing to fulfil their first-round tie against Garryowen last weekend.

College failed with an objection and appeal to have the game rescheduled on the grounds they were committed to playing in the Dudley Cup -- the one-day inter-varsity tournament held in Trinity last Saturday, which UCD won.

UCC claim the Munster branch had known of their Dudley Cup commitment since June and wanted an alternative date to be found for their meeting with Garryowen, but their appeal was denied last Friday -- with Garryowen given a bye to a quarter-final against UL Bohs.

Bruff were surprise 21-14 victors over Shannon in their first-round tie and there were wins also for Midleton, Dolphin, Highfield, Clonakilty and Cork Constitution.

As it stands, UCC will not feature in the Munster Senior Cup for the first time in their history -- a competition they last won in 1981 with a team including Donal Lenihan and Moss Finn.

  • Munster Senior Cup quarter-final draw: Garryowen v UL Bohemian; Midleton v Dolphin; Highfield v Clonakilty; Bruff v Cork Constitution. (Ties to be played weekend ending November 6)
