Tony Ward: In good hands with Whelan on the Council
Again, in the past few weeks, a major rugby appointment slipped under the radar as former hooker -- and a team-mate of mine with Garryowen, Munster and Ireland -- Patrick Charles Whelan was appointed the incoming vice-chairman of the Six Nations Council under former England and Lions captain Bill Beaumont.
Just as he did as a player, 'Pa' will stand his ground and not suffer fools. Having been captain and coach to Munster (where he and I had some, shall we say, colourful interchanges in our time), as well as manager to the Ireland squad in the Brian Ashton era (we'll not mention the war), he is well versed in administrative and tactical manoeuvring.
Let's just say Ireland's place at the Six Nations table is in good hands.
