'You haven't got a clue what I know' - Paul Kimmage and Luke Fitzgerald debate whether rugby has a doping problem
Dublin, doping and cheating vs cynicism were all up for discussion on the latest episode of The Left Wing, as Luke Fitzgerald was joined by Paul Kimmage for a blockbuster episode of Independent.ie's rugby podcast.
After the duo had a back-and-forth on Twitter on Tuesday, the Sunday Independent journalist agreed to chat to the former Ireland international and co-host Will Slattery - and the conversation didn't disappoint.
Kimmage took Fitzgerald up on a tweet where the former Ireland international referred to the ex-pro cyclist's use of amphetamines, while Fitzgerald was unhappy with Kimmage characterising Dublin pulling down Mayo players late on in the All-Ireland final as 'cheating'.
The trio also tackled the topic of pain-killer use in rugby, and whether players are going over the line in the quest to take the field - with Kimmage and Fitzgerald having different views on the matter.
Having played for ten years in the professional game, Fitzgerald was also vehement that he had never seen any doping in rugby.
"From what I've seen in the set ups, with Leinster and with Ireland, there is absolutely no evidence to support your suspicions in this area," Fitzgerald said.
Kimmage responded by showing Fitzgerald a folder of research he has compiled on the issue, and countered Fitzgerald's assertion.
"With respect Luke, you haven't got a clue what I know or who has come to me and knocked on my door and said I need to have a look at this. You really insult my intelligence when you say 'I know what goes on, I've been inside and you know nothing'. Because you don't know what I know."
