Former Leinster and Ireland star Luke Fitzgerald has revealed how he was approached by the Stormers in 2009 about a possible move to Super Rugby.

Fitzgerald had just been involved in Ireland's first Grand Slam, won Leinster's first Heineken Cup and had starred on the Lions tour of South Africa at the age of 21, but opted to remain with his province.

He would go on to win two further Heineken Cups with Leinster and played a big part on some huge days for Ireland.

Speaking on The Left Wing about the possibility he had to ply his trade in the southern hemisphere, he said: "It's a really exciting league and it was just after the 2009 Lions series.

"I got a possible opportunity to head down there. It would have been really exciting to go but, as it turns out, I was in a decent situation at leinster and Ireland at the time, having jut come off a Grand Slam, a Lions Tour and Heineken Cup.

"I decided to hang around.

"It would have been exciting, it's a great place to play. Cape Town would have been great to go down to.

"No one actually knew that so thanks for bringing it up."
