'Both these guys are special' - Luke Fitzgerald on what Jordan Larmour can take from Andrew Conway's development
Andrew Conway’s match-winning try for Munster against Toulon at Thomond Park last Saturday shows that he is entering the peak of his career, according to former Ireland international Luke Fitzgerald.
Conway returned from injury to score a spectacular try against the French giants in last weekend's Champions Cup quarter-final, with the 26-year-old continuing to improve after a brilliant 12 months.
Speaking on the The Left Wing, Independent.ie's rugby podcast in association with Laya Healthcare, Fitzgerald cited Conway’s size as a factor in why it has taken him until age 26 to find the best form of his career.
"Smaller guys have a bit more to work out in the game," he said.
"It takes longer as a small guy to figure out how to use your body weight well or how to not get exposed when marking a bigger guy.
"It takes a longer time to figure out the spaces where that kind of stuff will benefit the team and where you will get the best out of yourself.
"Your body position has to be better than anyone else's, you can’t go off your feet because of your body weight and it’s going to be a struggle for you in the air so you have to be really good there. Andrew Conway is a guy who’s gotten continuously better in all those facets."
Fitzgerald sees similarities between Conway and his Leinster counterpart, Jordan Larmour, whom he hopes will take heart from the Munster star’s recent progress.
"Both these guys are special rugby players," he said. "Don’t get me wrong on that.
"Jordan Larmour is a guy who should really be looking at Andrew Conway and saying 'if he can do that I can definitely be great at those things'."
