Smal in frame for Boks' job

The IRFU are happy that forwards coach Gert Smal will see out his contract with Ireland despite the fact that he is on a shortlist of three for the Springbok job which will become vacant next month.

"We don't comment on various coaching positions that become available but Gert is contracted to Ireland until the end of the 2012/2013 season and we are happy with that," a spokesman said on Friday. Smal signed a two-year extension on his Irish contract last July, having come on board along with Les Kiss in summer 2008.

Sources in South Africa place Smal on a shortlist of three, drawn up by the executive council of SARU, along with Stormers coach Alistair Coetzee and Bulls coach Heyneke Meyer. Smal and Coetzee were assistants to the Boks under Jake White when South Africa won the World Cup, but it is known that both have designs on being a head coach at some point.

IRFU sources maintain there has been no contact with Smal from South Africa, official or otherwise.
