TMO for Ireland-England clash recovering after being stabbed in the chest in South Africa
South African Television Match Official Shaun Veldsman is recovering in hospital with a hole in his lung after being stabbed after a game in South Africa.
He was attacked in his car after officiating at the game between the Stormers and Blues at Newlands yesterday.
The South African Rugby Union's head of corporate affairs, Andy Colquhoun, said Veldsman's window on the driver's side was broken and someone stabbed him with a sharp object.
"He has a hole in his lung after being stabbed," said Colquhoun.
Veldsman somehow managed to escape from the vehicle and ran away, before someone helped him on the side of the road.
The car's ignition was damaged but only Veldsman's cellphone was stolen. His bag with laptop was still lying on the back seat.
He is currently in a stable condition in the Stellenbosch Medi Clinic.
It is now looking highly unlikely that he will be able to act as the TMO for Ireland's crunch Six Nations clash with England at the Aviva Stadium on Sunday.
