He has made grown men shed a tear with his words of wisdom before important games and now Conor Murray has revealed how Paul O'Connell transformed a "flat atmosphere" in the Ireland camp into a Six Nations winning one.

Following Ireland's defeat against Wales last week, the Irish players returned to training deflated on the Tuesday and Murray says O'Connell was inspirational in changing the mood to get the team buzzing for their final game against Scotland in Murrayfield.

"Tuesday was a a bit of a flat session and Paulie said his words. He has been through this before and you know when he talks he is speaking the truth and he's got experience to back it up," said Murray.

"You quickly take on board what he is telling you. He just told us to, over the next few days, to think about the game, think about how special it could be.

"We came back in Thursday had a really good session. There were murmurs of points difference, but he's been through it many times with Munster, he's seen it before where they needed four tries.

"He spoke about your performance, the first 10 minutes, your first contact, your first moment. Win that, try and build on it and go from there. He is an incredible leader and we are very glad to have him."
