Rescheduled France game snubbed by fans

MORE than a third of rugby fans who bought tickets through the IRFU for the abandoned Ireland versus France game have opted not to travel to the rescheduled match, writes Colm Kelpie.

About 6,000 travelled to the game that was called off at the last minute on February 11 because of a frozen pitch at the Stade de France in Paris.

Approximately 4,100 tickets were allocated to the Irish Rugby Football Union, which estimated last night after the deadline for refunds closed that between 1,500 and 1,600 people had applied to get their money back.

Those who bought through travel agents or ticket sites had to contact those agencies to claim the refund.

Online agency said about 50pc of its sales were refunded, but it refused to say how many tickets were sold. Figures for travel agents could not be obtained last night.

The refund figures suggest the number of Irish travelling to support the team will be considerably smaller than hoped, as the French Rugby Federation said it will not be reissuing new tickets for the rescheduled game.

The IRFU said it will try to re-sell some of the returned tickets to fans who weren't at the abandoned match but had expressed an interest in travelling to the re-fixed game on Sunday, March 4.

It said final official figures for the refund numbers would not be known until today.
