Leinster and Ireland star Gordon D'Arcy didn't make Joe Schmidt's 23-man squad for the clash against Italy at the Stadio Olimpico - but he has made it onto Twitter.

For the first time ever, the IRFU named the squad on Twitter and included the Twitter handles of each of the XV players who'll battle it out in Rome.

Gordon D'Arcy missed out on a place on the squad, with Schmidt instead opting for Jared Payne to partner Robbie Henshaw in the midfield.

One Twitter user pointed out that it may have been the IRFU's first opportunity to announce the entire team on social media, since D'Arcy wasn't a Twitter user.

D'Arcy, who is an active Twitter user, responded: "Jesus.. Kick a lad when is down why don't you #whatdididotoyou."

The Wexford centre has been a central player for Ireland over the past decade but the emergence of Robbie Henshaw and Jared Payne has seen pushed out of Schmidt's plans slightly.

One of those amused by the exchange was Wicklow comedian Dara Ó Briain.
