Shine stars in Marist victory
Connacht Schools Junior Cup: Marist College 20 Garbally College 17
Tom Shine was the star man in the curtain-raiser at the Sportsground as Marist College, Athlone reclaimed the junior crown with a deserved victory over Garbally College.
Marist led 17-5 at half-time as tries from Shine, Sam Fogarty and Kieran Egan paved the way.
Garbally began this game with five players who started last year's final against Coláiste Iognáid, and scored first with Naoise Murphy's try.
The holders went close again in the fifth minute but Shine made a vital tackle, although three minutes later Garbally pounced when Tom Fitzpatrick sent Murphy over. Scrum-half Matthew Devine missed the difficult conversion and Garbally wouldn't score again in the opening half.
Marist scored three first-half tries and it could have been more had Ger Colleran not come up with a brilliant tackle to deny Diarmuid Carey.
However, the try did come in the 14th minute and it was openside flanker Sam Fogarty who scored with the conversion from Fallon ensuring they took the lead for the first time.
Shine crashed over for Marist's second try nine minutes before the interval and their third came on the stroke of half-time when tighthead Kieran Egan scored for a 17-5 lead.
The deficit was reduced in the 46th minute when John Claffey ran in unopposed.
Fallon scored a crucial penalty moments later and Marist were 20-12 ahead. And Marist held on despite a try from Fitzpatrick.
