Ardscoil Ris’ search for their first ever Munster Senior Cup title goes on after Rockwell College edged them in a thriller at Thomond Park today.
Mikey Wilson’s first half try proved decisive as Rockwell claimed their 26th title and their first since 2012.
Nerves got the better of bot sides early on as they struggled to settle into the game in front of a large St. Patrick’s Day crowd.
Bill Johnston had the chance to put his side in front but he pushed a 20-minute penalty just wide of the posts.
The Rockwell out-half made amends five minutes later when he slotted a penalty from wide on the left but Ardscoil immediately drew level through Conor Fitzgerald.
The Tipperary school ensured that they went into the break in front when Mikey Wilson forced himself over the whitewash and Johnston converted for a 10-3 half time lead.
Fitzgerald cut the gap to four points with a second penalty 15 minutes after the restart but a minute later Johnston fired over a penalty from just inside the Ardscoil half.
Johnston knocked over a third penalty before Ardscoil’s Ian Brown got over for a try that Fitzgerald converted with five minutes left of the clock.
Johnston was sent to the sin bin for a deliberate knock on but a Bryan McLaughlin try a minute from full time which was converted by Tom McHale ensured that Rockwell were crowned champions once again.
