Quirke adds gloss to Wesley triumph
Wesley College 27 Castleknock College 12 Vinnie Murray Cup Final
It took two late spectacular tries from wings Tim Spencer and Alistair Quirke to kill off Castleknock in a thrilling decider at Donnybrook yesterday.
The main difference was the simple four tries-to-nil return for Wesley as their well-organised defence marshalled 'Knock's attack, while finding the time to strike for five pointers.
The first offering was a treat as their captain Adam Curry blasted away from mere mortals for a 60-metre wonder try to make it 5-0 in the 16th minute.
However, the steady boot of winger Marc Boucher gave Castleknock a 12-8 lead at the interval.
After the break Wesley's power game came to the fore, with David Gilmer breaching the defence after a series of drives. Bill Corrigan added the extras.
Spencer then intercepted a Castleknock pass to run through to put the game beyond doubt in the 68th minute before Quirke rubbed salt into an open wound when Wesley countered from their own line in injury-time
