Pres turn on style to set up semi-final derby
PBC 39 Bandon Grammar 10 Munster Schools Senior Cup
Cork's PBC will meet their great city rivals CBC in the semi-finals after crushing Bandon Grammar at Irish Independent Park yesterday.
Pres, the competition's joint record winners along with Christians on 28 victories, never looked like being upset by a game Bandon side here, asserting their superiority early on to ease fears of an upset.
Out-half Peter Sylvester kicked well throughout for the victors and his second-minute penalty set them on their way before full-back Jonathan Wren profited from good work by James Broderick to cross for the first try on eight minutes.
Scrum-half Harry Shanahan got their second try when he was on hand after David Hyland was tackled close to the line, and Sylvester added the extras for 15-0.
Sean Hudson's penalty opened Bandon's account as half-time approached, but Sylvester cancelled that out with a monstrous effort to leave it 18-3 at the break and Pres pushed on further upon the resumption.
Jack O'Shea made it 23-3, Sylvester again showcasing his kicking talents with the conversion and he also added two points after a 50th-minute penalty try and then did likewise when O'Shea got the fifth try after a lung-busting run.
At the death, there was some consolation for Bandon as their captain and star performer Gavin Coombes touched down following excellent work from James French the architect.
Hudson converted, but it was PBC who marched on to meet CBC.
The other semi-final will be an all-Limerick meeting of Castletroy College and Crescent College Comprehensive.
