Off-colour Clongowes ease into last four
It's been five years since Clongowes last lifted the trophy and on yesterday's evidence against an error-strewn CBC Monkstown side, the Kildare school have a lot of improvements to make if they are to end that drought.
Clongowes were far from their best but in truth, they didn't have to be as they eased their way into the semi-final draw.
Benjamin O'Shea kicked 12 points for his side and, with Monkstown failing to score in the entire second half, they could only respond with one try to their opponents' three.
O'Shea's early penalty put Clongowes into a lead that they wouldn't relinquish and Edward Carroll's try just after the half-hour eased the nerves as Monkstown were beginning to gain a foothold in the game.
O'Shea's conversion stretched the gap to 10 points but a well-worked try on the stroke of half time from full-back Tom Kelly halved the deficit.
Any hopes of Monkstown causing an upset were dashed after 41 minutes as a second O'Shea penalty was soon followed by a converted try for skipper Jack Moore.
Monkstown's misery was compounded when replacement Cameron Watson had his clearance kick blocked down by Sean McMahon, who then had the easiest of tasks to dot down.
O'Shea again converted to seal a comfortable victory but with a step in quality to follow in the last four, Clongowes will need to match that with a step up in their own performance.
